Start with a DOCX and a reference appearance
Keep the original document unchanged and obtain a reference export from its current editor. The editable file contains the material to revise; the reference shows what the pages are supposed to look like. Give the working copy a separate filename so saving it does not replace your only source.
Choose a representative file with the features you use. For a report, that might mean heading styles, a table across a page boundary and a header. For a reviewed draft, include actual comments and tracked changes. These are editorial test suggestions, not a promise that every listed feature round-trips.
WordCraft DOCX checks that matter to the recipient
The maintainer assessment discusses behavior gaps and is more useful for a compatibility decision than a headline feature count. Read its current entries for the features in your document, then compare the result directly.
| Document feature | What to compare | If it changes |
|---|---|---|
| Fonts and text flow | Family, style, line breaks and page endings | Resolve the font or layout difference before approving |
| Headings and lists | Style roles, navigation and numbering | Check structure as well as visible formatting |
| Tables and sections | Cell content, splits, margins and page breaks | Compare the affected page and adjacent pages |
| Comments and changes | Review state and expected accept/reject actions | Retain the reviewed original and clarify the handoff |
| References | Footnotes, captions and any required fields | Check the actual target and generated output |
Check the saved copy in the receiving editor
Use the editor and platform that the recipient will actually use. A second preview in the same application cannot establish how the next application reads the saved file.
- Record the source editor, recipient editor and the features the recipient must keep.
- Open a duplicate in WordCraft and compare it with the reference appearance.
- Make one representative edit without accepting unrelated tracked changes.
- Save under a new DOCX filename and reopen that file in the receiving editor.
- Inspect the edited section, its surrounding pages and the required review state.
- Keep the original, working copy and checked output until the handoff is accepted.
Use PDF as a reading copy, alongside the editable source
The WordCraft repository documents PDF export. Inspect the actual PDF after export: page breaks, clipped tables, headers, footnotes and text all matter to a reader. Try selecting text where the recipient needs searchable or copyable content.
A PDF can help a recipient compare appearance, but it does not replace an editable DOCX or establish that its review history was preserved. Agree whether you are sending a draft for changes or a final reading copy, then name the files accordingly.
Decide on compatibility from the tested document
If the receiving file changes in a way that matters, keep the existing workflow for that handoff while investigating the mismatch. A change to a page break and a missing review comment have different consequences; record what changed instead of simply calling the format supported or unsupported.
For WordCraft DOCX compatibility, the useful result is a checked, reopened copy and a clear record of remaining differences. This guide has not measured WordCraft against Microsoft Word and does not assign a compatibility percentage.
Questions, answered
Does DOCX support mean identical Microsoft Word rendering?
No. Test layout, structure and required review features on the saved file in the receiving editor.
Should I send only a PDF?
Send the format the recipient needs. A reading PDF can accompany a DOCX, but it does not replace the editable document when revisions are required.
How should I test track changes?
Use a duplicate with a known review state, make a representative edit and inspect the saved copy in the recipient’s editor. Retain the original reviewed document.
