What to check when PSD fonts are missing

When PSD text changes after opening, check the font family and style before resizing text boxes. A substituted font can alter spacing and line breaks while the rest of the document still looks correct.

Missing fonts or a different text layer?

First determine whether the text is editable. In a layered document, a Type layer carries text settings; a flattened preview contains only pixels. You cannot recover the original font settings by selecting a rendered PNG.

Compare the affected layer with a reference from the document owner. Record the family, style and any changed line breaks. A regular and a semibold face may have different metrics, so a similar-looking family name is not enough to establish a match.

Check the font before changing the layout

Work on a duplicate document. This sequence separates a font mismatch from changes to the text box or the document itself.

  1. Select the affected editable text layer and record its font family and style.
  2. Ask the document owner for the exact face or an approved substitute, plus a reference export.
  3. If you have permission to use the font file, follow Photopea’s documented font-loading route: open the font file as you would another supported resource.
  4. Select the intended face and compare line breaks, alignment and spacing with the reference.
  5. Save the corrected working copy separately and inspect the next exported PNG.

When you must substitute a font

A substitute is a design decision. Do not treat a visually similar face as a compatibility fix without checking the layout. Compare long headlines, narrow columns and text near an edge; these reveal differences more clearly than a single short word.

Agree on the replacement with the recipient when the original is unavailable. Record the replacement in the handoff so the next editor knows which face to use. Avoid stretching the text merely to imitate the old width before resolving the font choice.

Make the next PSD handoff easier

Keep an editable master and a flat reference export together. The master supports revisions; the reference shows the intended appearance. A screenshot alone cannot carry the editable text settings.

For a missing-font problem, the best next action is to identify the exact face, load a permitted copy or approve a substitute, and recheck the rendered output. This site does not distribute fonts or establish their usage rights.

Questions, answered

Does opening a PSD guarantee its fonts are available?

No. Check the font family and style in the editor and compare the rendered result with a reference.

Can I load a custom font in Photopea?

Its official documentation describes loading your own font files. Use a font you are permitted to use.

Can a PNG preserve editable text?

No. PNG contains rendered pixels. Keep the PSD working copy for text changes.
