# Export a PSD to PNG without losing your working file

To turn a PSD into PNG, open a copy in a compatible editor and export a PNG as a separate file. Keep the original PSD: a PNG contains rendered pixels, not your editable text and layer structure.

## Before you export a PSD to PNG

Decide whether the recipient needs a preview, a transparent cutout or an editable working document. A PNG is useful for the first two, while the editable handoff still needs the PSD and any required fonts.

Make a working copy with a clear name, such as poster-working.psd. Keep the document owner’s reference preview available. If text wraps differently or a mask changes when you open the copy, fix that mismatch before exporting: the PNG will preserve the rendered mismatch too.

## How to export a PNG in Photopea

Photopea’s official documentation separates Save as PSD from Export as. That distinction is the key to keeping an editable master and a flat deliverable.

1. Open the official Photopea website and use File → Open for a copy of your PSD.
2. Inspect layer visibility, text, masks and canvas dimensions against the reference.
3. Use File → Export as → PNG. Check the export preview and the intended dimensions before saving.
4. Save the output under a separate name. If you edited the source, save a separate PSD working copy as well.
5. Reopen the downloaded PNG in the application where it will be used.

## Check the downloaded PNG, not only the export dialog

A successful download tells you that a file was written. It does not establish that the source rendered correctly or that the dimensions fit the destination.

For a transparent asset, put the output over both a light and a dark background. If a solid white background remains, inspect visible background layers in the working document before trying the export again.

PSD export checks

| What you see | What to inspect | Next step |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Changed text | Font family, style and line breaks | Use the missing-font guide before exporting again |
| White rectangle | Visible background layer and actual alpha | Hide only the unwanted layer in a working copy |
| Small or soft image | Export pixel dimensions | Export for the required display or print size |
| Missing detail | Layer visibility, masks and effects | Compare with the original editor’s reference |

## Keep layers for the next revision

A PNG is a deliverable, not a replacement for the layered master. Once text and effects have been rendered to pixels, changing a headline is a different editing task from editing a Type layer.

Send the PNG for display and keep the PSD for revisions. If someone needs to change the layout, clarify the editable handoff rather than sending only the preview. PhotoCraft is another documented PSD route to investigate, but this site has not tested your document in that application.

## Questions, answered

### Does converting PSD to PNG preserve layers?

No. Keep a separate PSD for editable layers and export PNG for the rendered image.

### Can PNG have a transparent background?

Yes, PNG supports transparency. The exported pixels must actually contain it; the extension alone is not enough.

### Why does my PNG look different from the PSD reference?

Check missing fonts, layer visibility, masks and effects in the editor before exporting. A flat export carries the current rendering.
